Morphis Mailbag: Hard Time Playing Chords

Dear Blake: I couldn't find it on the site, but do you have a section for finger strength? I can play the stings, but as soon as I get to chords I have problems (I have small hands) with keeping the strings down, and I keep getting annoying buzzing. What's the proper hand placement for the left hand? Chords are very awkward to play, and I know it's easier than I'm making it.

Blake: Don't worry, chords are difficult at first, even for someone who has been playing for a while - coming across a new chord can take a little practice at first.

Here is part of the problem, chords are just not a natural concept and our brains give us a tough time learning them. I truly mean that, our brain doesn't really understand what we are trying to do but I promise you as you practice it will all of the sudden click.

Look, this doesn't just apply to the guitar. Remember when you first leaned how to write? You started with one letter at time and took a long time! However, as you practice writing that letter it eventually clicks with your brain it becomes natural. Guitar Chords are no different - practice and I promise it will go from awkward to natural.

Another part of the problem, I'm guessing, could be your thumb, if your thumb is on the wrong spot of the neck it can make your fingers flat, flat fingers can lead to buzzing and muting. It's important that your thumb is located properly, however, keep in mind that the thumb tends to move with the type of chord.
